Navigating Your Baby's First Checkup

Welcoming a new baby into the family can be both exciting and stressful. The good news is that you can work with pediatricians and other experts to safeguard your child’s well-being. The first checkup can be especially daunting, and you may not know what to expect. You’ll quite likely have a lot of questions as well. If you need to schedule a first checkup or need assistance with newborn care in Tucson, AZ, contact Mesquite Pediatrics. Dr. Jeff Couchman, Dr. Susan McMahon, Dr. Nicole Abdy, and Dr. Joshua Yell are ready to help you and your family.

Proper Preparation for Before the First Checkup

First, you should try to schedule the checkup or arrange your schedule to ensure that you and your loved ones are not rushed. It’s important to get in and see a doctor within the first 3 to 5 days after birth, but at the same time, you should try to avoid any stress that might come up if you have to stick to a tight schedule on a busy day.

In the days leading up to the checkup, you might find yourself with a lot of questions and concerns. If so, jot them down and feel free to raise the points once you meet with your doctor. It’s a good idea to track how many wet diapers your child has and how much they are eating as your provider will likely ask about that.

You should dress your child in simple, easy-to-remove clothing. Make sure you have a fully packed diaper bag, and if possible, avoid last-minute packing. It’s also wise to give yourself plenty of time for traveling. Throughout the whole process, it’s best to have another adult with you who can provide assistance.

You’ll want to bring insurance info and a photo ID. Also, be prepared to provide your newborn with a feeding during the trip and checkup.

What to Expect During the Checkup

Often, the first checkup is rather quick, assuming that no complications or serious issues are found. While the appointment may not last long, your doctor will be checking over many things. Measurements will be taken, including for stats like weight.

Your child may have lost a bit of weight since birth, which isn’t itself a serious concern. Likewise, don’t get too hung up on growth charts and percentiles. Things change very quickly in the early weeks and doctors are typically more concerned about steady growth rather than starting points.
